Who am to assist?

Acts 12:24-13:5

The word of God continued to spread and to gain followers. Barnabas and Saul completed their task and came back from Jerusalem, bringing John Mark with them.

In the church at Antioch the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and keeping a fast, the Holy Spirit said, ‘I want Barnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have called them.’ So it was that after fasting and prayer they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
So these two, sent on their mission by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there sailed to Cyprus. They landed at Salamis and proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; John acted as their assistant.

Scripture: The words in the scripture that spoke to me today are

John acted as their assistant.

Observation: What is Jesus saying personally to me today – Who am I to assist?

The holy spirit places people in our lives for purposes that we sometimes cannot see. Is the purpose of someone assisting for their benefit and growth or the benefit of those that they assist, for the benefit of God or for all of these reasons? This is probably not for me to work out why but perhaps for me to be open to who he wants me to journey with and where God wants me to be. Even though the two big guns in Saul and Barnabas were sent on mission, a less experienced person was sent along for support, this says to me that it doesn’t matter about qualifications, just a heart to say yes.

Thank you for speaking to me Jesus

Application: How do I respond to what Jesus is saying today, right now?

I know that Jesus has placed me in a workplace that has huge responsibilities, for a purpose that could be to fix the place and make sure that it survives. Out of hundreds of staff, I have come across someone that is desperate need and I offered my support to them yesterday. I entertained the idea that my real purpose in this job could be to help this one person. Sure, I have to do my best professionally but has God placed me here so one, just one of his children comes to know his love? So today I hear that I should go one step further and put aside some one on one time for this person and put my offer in to practice rather than just saying I am here for you if you need me. I need to be more intentional and place myself in a position where the Holy spirit can work through the both of us.

Prayer:

Lord,
use me as you will.
Support me in my endeavours to be the one that can assist and share your love if this is what you want.
Guide and protect the both of us so that we act in accordance with you will.
May the Holy spirit work in amongst us and through me.
Amen
