Jesus called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. He said to them, ‘Take nothing for the journey: neither staff, nor haversack, nor bread, nor money; and let none of you take a spare tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there; and when you leave, let it be from there. As for those who do not welcome you, when you leave their town shake the dust from your feet as a sign to them.’ So they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the Good News and healing everywhere.
Scripture: The words that spoke to me today are
Take nothing for the journey
Observation: Trust the instructions
There is a real simplicity in the words of the Gospel today, hard, challenging but simple. Jesus lays it out explicitly, step by step what he wants the disciples to do and how to do it. He doesn’t ask us to think deeply about what he wants from us, in fact I think that he wants us to trust that he knows exactly what he is doing and for us to trust in the instructions. He has also given us everything we need even before we set out on our journeys just like he does with the disciples in their journey. We have all the gifts and talents to start, he provides the strength, courage and blessings after we say yes and get on with what ever it is that he wants us to do.
I like it when Jesus gives me clear instructions even if they are difficult ones. It’s when I don’t hear the instructions that I become unsettled, impatient and start to wonder aimlessly. This reminds me of an acronym I once saw
B – basic
I – instructions
B – before
L – leaving
E – earth
I have all the instructions that I need, all I need to do listen and not expect to always have it laid out for me and seek it at a deeper level. Sometimes I just need to be OK with the silence as this is what I think Jesus wants from me too. So today is a day of silence and being comfortable in the silence and to trust in this instruction.
You have always given me what I need, at the right time in the manner.
I trust I what you say to me today and seek to be comfortable with the silence.
I sit with your presence and lean in to your loving heart.
In amongst the messiness and business of my life you are the stable influence, my rock.
May your spirit be with me and guide in everything that I do
