Mercy is not just a word

Matthew 9:9-13

As Jesus was walking on, he saw a man named Matthew sitting by the customs house, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him.

While he was at dinner in the house it happened that a number of tax collectors and sinners came to sit at the table with Jesus and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does your master eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ When he heard this he replied, ‘It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and learn the meaning of the words: What I want is mercy, not sacrifice. And indeed I did not come to call the virtuous, but sinners.’

Application: How do I respond to what Jesus is saying to me today, right now what do I do?

Mercy – noun

compassion or forgiveness shown towards someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm.
synonyms:leniency, lenience, clemency, compassion, grace, pity, charity, forgiveness, forbearance, quarter, humanity, humaneness, humanitarianism;

This is what I need to do, all of the words that have a meaning of mercy, particularly compassion and forgiveness. What do I do when a come face to face to this person that I need to show mercy and forgiveness when all I want to do is punish them? I need to learn what mercy is by doing something and acting as Jesus wants me as this is what pleases him. It doesn’t eliminate the need for justice but that is not my job or responsibility. I will be polite and civil next time i see them, but my true work is in prayer. I will pray for them, the victim in particular. both of these actions will test me but I know that mercy is a better option than what I am currently being.

Prayer:

Lord,
help me to learn about your mercy.
To do the actions and experience that mercy is not just a word.
Only through you can I do this.
Amen
