From sinner to saint

John 21:15-19

Jesus showed himself to his disciples, and after they had eaten he said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these others do?’ He answered, ‘Yes Lord, you know I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ A second time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He replied, ‘Yes, Lord, you know I love you.’

Jesus said to him, ‘Look after my sheep.’ Then he said to him a third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was upset that he asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ and said, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.
‘I tell you most solemnly,
when you were young
you put on your own belt
and walked where you liked;
but when you grow old
you will stretch out your hands,
and somebody else will put a belt round you
and take you where you would rather not go.’
In these words he indicated the kind of death by which Peter would give glory to God. After this he said, ‘Follow me.’

Scripture: The words in the scripture that spoke to me today are

when you grow old
you will stretch out your hands,
and somebody else will put a belt round you
and take you where you would rather not go.’

Observation: What is Jesus saying personally to me today – From sinner to saint

As Jesus takes Peter through his denial to acceptance, from sin to surrender, from weakness to strength, he then begins the transformation of leading his own path to allowing Jesus to lead him. I like the imagery of stretching out the hands to allow God to dress him with the belt. God in service, Peter in acceptance. Over time through this process Peter transforms from sinner to saint and the place in which his going is in total contrast to where he thought he might go.

Thank you for speaking to me Jesus

Application: How do I respond to what Jesus is saying to me today, right now?

I have the same offer in front of me that Peter had, hopefully without the horrible death part! The transformation of myself to extending my hands and allowing God to both dress and lead me to where he wants me to go. This is somewhat scary and I know that there is a part of me that denies the possibility and rejects the call. Every time that I have gone to where Jesus wanted me and even though I didn’t want to go, he blessed me deeply. I am encouraged by Peters humanity and weakness as I can relate to this deeply. So I respond today and look at the places where Jesus is niggling my soul to allow him to lead me. Today I stop a justification of sin that I have been doing for nearly my whole life and take a chance. My thoughts and behaviours in my sexuality are in question and I know that Jesus has asked me more than three times to do something about it so I will do it today!

Prayer:

Lord,
take me by the hand, put my belt on and lead me to where ever it is that you desire.
I surrender to the space in my soul that you are speaking to and put aside my fears and doubts.
Let the part of me shine that is more like you than I might believe.
Your life in me is the most important thing right now, may I do justice to your offer today.
Amen
