People pleasing

People pleasing

What is Jesus saying personally to me today – People pleasing

Herod loves to receive positive feedback, so much so that he is prepared to kill for it. The desperate need he has to feel that he is loved, liked or just fond of is a human desire but can only be deeply and truely satisfied by the love of God. It is an extreme example of seeking affirmation by people pleasing but it shows how insidious and dangerous it is to seek it from areas that are not from God. Please God first and last.

How do i respond to what Jesus is saying personally to me today?

I am a people pleaser to a degree and have been foe a long time because I like the affirmations I receive. I like to help people but the risk is three fold, that I do it for the wrong reasons, that it doesn’t allow others to learn and grow and that is takes away my own opportunity to learn. I have to learn the balance between being empathetic, compassionate and dispassionate. At the moment there are so many people that are suffering in their minds and each time I come across one, I will offer that person to God and not try to rescue or be all to them.

Prayer:

Lord,
I surrender all people to you.
I give everyone and everything to you.
May I do all that I can for others within my limitations while leaving space for you.
Let me not get in the way of the Holy Spirit and if so let the Holy Spirit work through me.
Amen

Acts 12:1-11

King Herod started persecuting certain members of the Church. He beheaded James the brother of John, and when he saw that this pleased the Jews he decided to arrest Peter as well. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread, and he put Peter in prison, assigning four squads of four soldiers each to guard him in turns. Herod meant to try Peter in public after the end of Passover week. All the time Peter was under guard the Church prayed to God for him unremittingly.
On the night before Herod was to try him, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with double chains, while guards kept watch at the main entrance to the prison. Then suddenly the angel of the Lord stood there, and the cell was filled with light. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him. ‘Get up!’ he said ‘Hurry!’ – and the chains fell from his hands. The angel then said, ‘Put on your belt and sandals.’ After he had done this, the angel next said, ‘Wrap your cloak round you and follow me.’ Peter followed him, but had no idea that what the angel did was all happening in reality; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed through two guard posts one after the other, and reached the iron gate leading to the city. This opened of its own accord; they went through it and had walked the whole length of one street when suddenly the angel left him. It was only then that Peter came to himself. ‘Now I know it is all true’ he said. ‘The Lord really did send his angel and has saved me from Herod and from all that the Jewish people were so certain would happen to me.’

Of course He does

What is Jesus saying personally to me today – Of course He does

Does Jesus,
see us in among the crowds
want to heal us
make himself accessible
answer our prayers
want us to go to God in thanks
do the impossible
touch us
Of course he does!

Thank you for speaking to me Jesus

How do I respond to what Jesus is saying personally to me today?

Three days of consolation in a row after a long period of trails and tempering, thank goodness! Does Jesus answer my prayer, does he provide me rest and comfort, does he want me to continue to learn from his gentle and humble heart, Of course he does! No application other than acknowledging all that he does for me.

Prayer:

Lord,
thank you for doing all that you promise you will.
I give you praise and glory
I continue to lean in to you and do all the things that you ask of me
Amen

Matthew 8:1-4

After Jesus had come down from the mountain large crowds followed him. A leper now came up and bowed low in front of him. ‘Sir,’ he said ‘if you want to, you can cure me.’ Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said, ‘Of course I want to! Be cured!’ And his leprosy was cured at once. Then Jesus said to him, ‘Mind you do not tell anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest and make the offering prescribed by Moses, as evidence for them.’

Listen and act

What is Jesus saying personally to me today

This is not just a warning, it is an invitation to get to know Jesus. To listen in a way that affects the way you see yourself, identifies your true intentions and changes your heart is no easy task and requires real courage. Taking action on what the ears and heart has heard completes the preparation and solidifies the transformation or restoration of God within us. All of this is sensible preparation for all of their impending challenges that will inevitably come through a human existence. Now that is sensible.

How do I respond to what Jesus is saying personally to me today?

Perhaps I have done the right things in listening and acting and that all my prior work has prepared me to whether the smoke, hail, bushfires, COVID-19 and personal challenges. Maybe, just maybe, I am getting through the storm because Jesus has made a home within me. It’s hard to gauge but worthwhile considering that I have been sensible man. Maybe Jesus is asking me to take stock today and not just entertain the idea that I have been obedient but to trust and actually believe that he is my cornerstone. Just like yesterday when Jesus says to me I am enough, today I feel like he is asking me to believe and trust that he has been holding me up, that my foundations are set in him and all will be awesome. So that’s what I will do, believe, trust and stop worrying.

Prayer:

Lord,
I take stock of your presence.
I stop worrying and leave my concerns behind me.
You are my foundations, I have set my heart in you.
My house will stand firm in you and I have nothing to fear.
Amen

Matthew 7:21-29

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘It is not those who say to me, “Lord, Lord,” who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in heaven. When the day comes many will say to me, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, cast out demons in your name, work many miracles in your name?” Then I shall tell them to their faces: I have never known you; away from me, you evil men!
‘Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house, and it did not fall: it was founded on rock. But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and struck that house, and it fell; and what a fall it had!’
Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and his teaching made a deep impression on the people because he taught them with authority, and not like their own scribes.

Carefully walk the path

What is Jesus saying personally to me today – Carefully walk the path

Three short, simple, powerful, somewhat random sentences in the one passage that say so much. If I reflect on them collectively they say to me, carefully walk the path that Jesus has provided us. All the answers are contained in these three statements, be careful what you say and do, go along this path to where He is and don’t forget that we are all one in God by treating everyone as ourselves. What’s the one thing that I could take away from such a powerful bunch of messages?

How do I respond to what Jesus is saying personally to me today?

There are so many things that I feel I need to do particularly around the “oneness” of us all and what I am in among that. I still struggle to fully experience the oneness message and continue to hold to to patterns, behaviours and language that doesn’t connect me to God in all of us. I have to own and apologise to two people, I have to personally call three other people and I need to write my list of people that I will pray for collectively each day. The message today for me is to continue to put myself in a position to be “oneness” not just think about it and let the Holy Spirit continue to teach me.

Prayer:

Lord,
Take away my fear of being in unity in you through others.
Put in me a brave heart, a heart of love and action.
May I own my failures and seek the restoration of myself in you.
Guilt and shame are not what determines me.
Amen

Matthew 7:6,12-14

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls in front of pigs, or they may trample them and then turn on you and tear you to pieces.
‘So always treat others as you would like them to treat you; that is the meaning of the Law and the Prophets.
‘Enter by the narrow gate, since the road that leads to perdition is wide and spacious, and many take it; but it is a narrow gate and a hard road that leads to life, and only a few find it.’

Is it really suffering

What is Jesus saying personally to me today – Is it really suffering

I feel that Peter is challenging the perception of suffering, that perhaps there is nothing extraordinary about it and that it is a natural condition for those that are seeking Christ. If this is so and the end goal is to be in complete union with Him, then all that we go through is a blessing. Expect to suffer or reframe the word suffer to something else because is it really suffering if we are getting closer to God?

Thank you for speaking to me Jesus

How do I respond to what Jesus is saying personally to me today?

It is in the internal battle that I see myself suffering the most. There is nothing extraordinary about this, I am no worse or better off than anyone else seeking Christ. The questions of why me or thoughts of, it’s so hard are dismissive of the blessing of God being so interested in me that he refuses to leave me in a position of ignorance of him. As soon as I start to believe that it is hard and I am oppressed, victimised and misunderstood, I go some distance then fall down. This pattern is dumb, it is futile and being founded in my own strength is destined to fail. Today I must stop resisting the provocative and challenging style of love that someone close to me is providing. I am defensive and dismissive within my heart [not outwardly] and this must stop right now. I must see this all as blessings and nothing less.

Prayer:

Lord,
Teach me about your blessings, reframe my understanding of your way and your love.
Take me from seeing myself as a hard done by victim to the blessed son.
Amen

1 Peter 4:12-19

My dear people, you must not think it unaccountable that you should be tested by fire. There is nothing extraordinary in what has happened to you. If you can have some share in the sufferings of Christ, be glad, because you will enjoy a much greater gladness when his glory is revealed. It is a blessing for you when they insult you for bearing the name of Christ, because it means that you have the Spirit of glory, the Spirit of God resting on you. None of you should ever deserve to suffer for being a murderer, a thief, a criminal or an informer; but if anyone of you should suffer for being a Christian, then he is not to be ashamed of it; he should thank God that he has been called one. The time has come for the judgement to begin at the household of God; and if what we know now is only the beginning, what will it be when it comes down to those who refuse to believe God’s Good News? If it is hard for a good man to be saved, what will happen to the wicked and to sinners? So even those whom God allows to suffer must trust themselves to the constancy of the creator and go on doing good
