Worldly origins, holy destination

What is Jesus saying personally to me today – Worldly origins, holy destination

Jesus declares Simon and his genetic heritage three times or in other terms, his worldly origins. He then asks the love question followed a request to to care for and look after others followed up by a disturbing statement that Simon will go to places he would rather not go to. This is a statement of acknowledging the beginnings what ever they might be and the transition to a loving and holy destination not without its challenges. All three stages appear to be important because they are repeated not to be ignored.

How do I respond to what Jesus is saying personally to me today?

I have consciously declared to myself I am a fatherless son denying my worldly origins because of the abandonment I experienced. I am being led to a place that I would rather not go and that is to accept my father and to accept that I am His son. Further more and very uncomfortable, Jesus is calling me to love just as he asked Simon. He is asking me to not just forgive my own father but to love Him as well. Just as I thought I had dealt with this issue Jesus reveals the depth of my wound and the treatment might be painful but it is a Holy destination. I will communicate some type of forgiveness and love to my father without expecting anything in return, asking Jesus to guide me through the process.

Prayer:

Lord,
carry me through what you have asked me to do.
This is not something that I can do by myself.
You lead me to this place, take me all the way.
Treat my fear and anxiety with your comfort and love.
Amen

John 21:15-19

Jesus showed himself to his disciples, and after they had eaten he said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these others do?’ He answered, ‘Yes Lord, you know I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ A second time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He replied, ‘Yes, Lord, you know I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Look after my sheep.’ Then he said to him a third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was upset that he asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ and said, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.
‘I tell you most solemnly,
when you were young
you put on your own belt
and walked where you liked;
but when you grow old
you will stretch out your hands,
and somebody else will put a belt round you
and take you where you would rather not go.’
In these words he indicated the kind of death by which Peter would give glory to God. After this he said, ‘Follow me.’

Next level stuff

What is Jesus saying personally to me today – Next level stuff

After Paul has taken a beating, been abused and ridiculed, God asks Him to go to the next level. He is being stretched beyond what some might consider reasonable or even fair. He asks Paul and all of us to come out of the comfortable in to the impossible and he doesn’t do this lightly, he does it because he knows that with Him anything is possible. Do I think that I am capable of this next level stuff, God obviously does!

How do I respond to what Jesus is saying personally to me today?

How many levels of this faith journey is there? Just as I thought I have reached my capacity, and couldn’t possibly handle anything else God delivers me more more and to deal with. I feel vulnerable and completely inadequate to handle the new challenges of multiple family member sickness and the realization of how deep the wounds of my father relationship is on top of the current stresses and workload. I need to take some time off work for a start and in this time I must go to God for all the answers and strength. This is not a survival test, I don’t think it is just about getting through, I think that there has to be a better outcome than just not falling in a heap. I don’t know anything right now and perhaps that is a key point, I cant do this by myself.

Prayer:

Lord,
You place all these things in my path, I turn to you.
There is nothing left for me to do than to surrender all this to you.
Please provide me with all that I need because I cannot do this by myself.
Amen

Acts 22:30,23:6-11

Since the tribune wanted to know what precise charge the Jews were bringing, he freed Paul and gave orders for a meeting of the chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin; then he brought Paul down and stood him in front of them. Now Paul was well aware that one section was made up of Sadducees and the other of Pharisees, so he called out in the Sanhedrin, ‘Brothers, I am a Pharisee and the son of Pharisees. It is for our hope in the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.’ As soon as he said this a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was split between the two parties. For the Sadducees say there is neither resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, while the Pharisees accept all three. The shouting grew louder, and some of the scribes from the Pharisees’ party stood up and protested strongly, ‘We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel?’ Feeling was running high, and the tribune, afraid that they would tear Paul to pieces, ordered his troops to go down and haul him out and bring him into the fortress.
Next night, the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘Courage! You have borne witness for me in Jerusalem, now you must do the same in Rome.’

Preventative not always reactionary

What is Jesus saying personally to me today – Preventative not always reactionary

Many times I come to prayer because something in the past or present has affected me and I look towards Jesus for help, asking for guidance and healing. I have been reflecting on death recently and this is an item that is for the future, when ever that might be. It’s sort of counter intuitive thinking about the future as being in the present with Jesus is most important. There’s something in ‘guarding our hearts and thoughts’ that is a preventative prayer not a reaction to what’s happening in our lives and maybe its worthwhile talking to God about this.

How do I respond to what Jesus is saying personally to me today?

When I am with Jesus all is good, when I am not, its not so good. It sounds like a good prayer to ask God to guard my heart and thoughts for when I wonder away from him, for this is almost guaranteed to happen at some point in time. It is in my heart and thoughts where the wondering away starts and what a great place for Jesus to protect. I will finish my prayers with this request as a standard practice so I can be a bit preventative and not always reactionary in my faith.

Prayer:

Lord,
When I come to you in the present, prepare me for the future.
Guard my heart and thoughts for the times when I may stray from you.
Keep me here in the now with you so that I stray less.
Amen

Philippians 4:4-9

I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord; I repeat, what I want is your happiness. Let your tolerance be evident to everyone: the Lord is very near.
There is no need to worry; but if there is anything you need, pray for it, asking God for it with prayer and thanksgiving, and that peace of God, which is so much greater than we can understand, will guard your hearts and your thoughts, in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that we love and honour, and everything that can be thought virtuous or worthy of praise. Keep doing all the things that you learnt from me and have been taught by me and have heard or seen that I do. Then the God of peace will be with you.

The windy road to wisdom

What is Jesus saying personally to me today – The windy road to wisdom

It would appear that once wisdom gets a hold of you, many blessings are gifted. To get to that place requires a journey on a windy road of tests, trials, moulding and incredible discipline on our behalf. Like any apprentice learning their craft, it takes a certain amount of commitment and determination and the end of this apprenticeship is a straight road full of all the secrets of God. A road worth travelling I think.

How do I respond to what Jesus is saying personally to me today?

I remember in my 30’s thinking that it would pretty good to end up a wise old man. I thought that it would just happen as a result of getting older and enduring life’s experiences. I now know that’s not the case. I am faced with the opportunity to chase wisdom by working my way through Her plagues of discipline and ordeals. It’s not an easy task and it say’s this in the reading, there is no hiding it. There is a person that I want a much better relationship with and I will chase wisdom to create it. I haven’t completely sat back but there is much more that I can do to and I will seek wisdom to help me. I will pray for wisdom, be obedient, pay attention and seek her instructions.

Prayer:

Lord,
I seek your wisdom for healing and restoration in this relationship.
Guide and instruct me Wisdom.
I will walk the windy road to your knowledge and honour your ways.
What ever it is you want me to do I will follow and obey.
Amen

Ecclesiasticus 4:12-21

Wisdom brings up her own sons,
and cares for those who seek her.
Whoever loves her loves life,
those who wait on her early will be filled with happiness.
Whoever holds her close will inherit honour,
and wherever he walks the Lord will bless him.
Those who serve her minister to the Holy One,
and the Lord loves those who love her.
Whoever obeys her judges aright,
and whoever pays attention to her dwells secure.
If he trusts himself to her he will inherit her,
and his descendants will remain in possession of her;
for though she takes him at first through winding ways,
bringing fear and faintness on him,
plaguing him with her discipline until she can trust him,
and testing him with her ordeals,
in the end she will lead him back to the straight road
and reveal her secrets to him.

It cannot be taken, don’t give it away

It cannot be taken dont give it away

What is Jesus saying personally to me today – It cannot be taken, don’t give it away

When God the father, Jesus, the Holy Spirit enters our hearts and comes to our  concious awareness, that cannot ever be taken away by another person or experience. It is the million moments of choice that we have in our lives where we react to others and experiences that lead us one way or another. One way to retain this joy, the other to give it away. Our joy cannot be taken away, Jesus says this much, its only us that can give it away. This is a statement about how much power we actually have and we don’t even know it and perhaps a warning not give our power away to easily.

How do I respond to what Jesus is saying personally to me today?

At times during this week I have given my power and joy away. I have given it to negative experiences, the tiredness , to the battles going on, to others and are empty. Right now, this very moment, I have a choice, the choice of Jesus or the world and I choose the presence of Christ. I reclaim the power I have given away and turn inwards to see my joy and peace in the one that lives within me and loves me perfectly. I might have to repeat this!

Prayer:

Lord,
Thank you for your reminder of the power you have given me by living within me.
Help me not to give it away and at the moments of choice may I choose you.
I choose you right now.
I see you
Amen

John 16:20-23

Jesus said to his disciples:
‘I tell you most solemnly,
you will be weeping and wailing
while the world will rejoice;
you will be sorrowful,
but your sorrow will turn to joy.
A woman in childbirth suffers,
because her time has come;
but when she has given birth to the child she forgets the suffering
in her joy that a man has been born into the world.
So it is with you: you are sad now,
but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy,
and that joy no one shall take from you.
When that day comes,
you will not ask me any questions.’
